A newspaper editor (Cary Grant) uses the temptation of a big story to keep his ace reporter ex-wife (Rosalind Russell) from leaving and getting married to a straight-laced insurance agent (Ralph Bellamy), whom he doesn't believe is worthy of her. The explosive story involves the unfair execution of a convicted cop killer, a bumbling sheriff, a corrupt mayor, and the course of true love.
